Construction work to replace pilings missing following storms in 2014 is continuing into the spring, according to reports from California State Parks.
Businesses at the end of the pier are closed, but steps have been taken to ensure Malibu can still enjoy the popular Malibu Farm Cafe from close end of the pier, which remains open.
According to information provided by Malibu Farm Cafe spokespeople: “The Malibu Farm Cafe has moved to the front restaurant and is operating there daily at 7 a.m. serving cafe breakfast with the cafe staff … In addition, all cafe top selling items have moved onto the restaurant menu with additional seating.”
The long-awaited repair of the boat launch at the far end of the pier, which had been out of commission since Hurricane Marie in August 2014, is set to be completed before summer, if the project goes according to schedule. The ramp is not only an important safety feature for the historic pier, but it facilitates popular programs like fishing boats, U.S. Naval visits, and revenue-generating yacht mooring.
There is already word that these programs will begin again in 2017, should work on the ramp be completed on schedule (before Memorial Day).
In 2015, the state set aside $4.6 million to fix all of the damage done to the pier by Hurricane Marie, which included replacing at least 59 pilings. The repair work has continued off-and-on since emergency repairs began at the end of 2015, but State Parks officials said if work remains on schedule, the pier will be fully shored-up before peak season begins and work is ordered to halt.
A previous version of this story did not accurately describe the status of businesses operating on the pier.
