The Malibu Times, Malibu’s source for community news since 1946, seeks an editorial intern to contribute to our daily online news and weekly print newspaper content.
The editorial intern will work closely with the newspaper’s web and associate editors to assure the website is constantly updated with news from Malibu and surrounding communities. This position is primarily online, so fluency in and enthusiasm for Facebook, Twitter and other social media such as Instagram and Pinterest is paramount. Your byline will appear online daily, and if you prove capable there are ample opportunities for print assignments. This is a hands-on internship where you will be expected to make meaningful contributions early on.
Job Description:
-Work with the web editor and associate editor to brainstorm ideas for daily online stories (usually 300-400 words).
-Update and schedule social media posts.
-Handle breaking news such as traffic accidents/emergencies.
-Minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, with some flexibility to work from home or school.
Qualifications:
-Fluency in Facebook and Twitter.
-Some journalism coursework/experience in journalism and community coverage.
-Previous experience in online content management systems such as WordPress is a plus, but not required.
-Must have own transportation.
-Good people skills, especially when it comes to interviewing sources.
-We like go-getters who are willing to push themselves.
-Be receptive to feedback/edits and take direction well.
-Work coolly and productively under deadline.
