    Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

    ——

How much will it cost homeowners in the civic center area to connect to the mandatory sewer???

The answer to that dicey question continues to evolve.

Homeowners in the Sierra Estates … Malibu Colony and the Civic Center Way condominiums may find themselves at cross purposes.  Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/may-be-at-odds-over-sewer-costs/

People in the Malibu area seem to be using more rat poison then ever due to the recent fire. And now, another mountain lion has been found dead …  with rat poison in his liver. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/rat-poison-claims-a-giant-cougar/

Plans for the new Malibu high school design go back for public review tonight.  Interest appears to be coagulating for the option to separate middle and high schools with a performing arts center to be placed in between.  A meeting tonight.  Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/u-driveway-at-new-malibu-campus/

    You are listening to the latest news from Radio Malibu … F-M 99 point 1 K B U U.  ((( time  ))))

A national ranking of high schools is out … and Malibu High School has slipped.

Last year … the U-S News and World Report assessment put Malibu High as ranked 57th within California.

This year … it has slipped to number 125.

Still … Malibu High School in Malibu is among the best high schools in America.

This is according to the U.S. News & World Report … in its most comprehensive ranking yet of the nation’s high schools.

Nearby schools are in about the sdame league.

Beverly Hills High is ranked 114th within California.

    Santa Monica … 134.

    Calabasas High is number 450.

    Oaks Christian was not rated.

The factors considered in compiling the list include college readiness; reading and math proficiency; reading and math performance; underserved student performance; college curriculum breadth; and graduation rates.

The data also take into account school enrollment, student diversity, participation in free and reduced-price meal programs, graduation rates and the results of state assessment tests. U.S. News worked with the global research firm RTI International to rank the schools.

Members of Congress are back in Washington after a two-week holiday recess, but there’s no sign of a breakthrough on disaster relief funding that California and other states have been waiting on for months.

The City of Malibu has 6 million dollars riding on this.

The sticking point appears to be the same:

The White House will not allow more money for Puerto Rico hurricane recovery, while Democrats say they won’t pass relief for other disasters without it.

The Malibu Triathlon has added a third event.

The marathon weekend in September will now kick off at 4 in the morning Saturday … September 14th.

The new Malibu Long Course will extend far beyond Malibu … with a 56 mile loop bike race up the coast highway to Point Mugu and the farmlands of Camarillo.

That will mean crowds arriving at Zuma Beach at 4 a-m both Saturday and Sunday of that race weekend in mid September.

The Malibu triathlon also has a new corporate sponsor.

    Bank of America.

Some of the proceeds from the big race go to fund vital cancer research at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

The race uses state and city streets at no charge.

Another stalker is bothering another Malibu celebrity.

Chris Martin … frontman of the band Coldplay… has a woman trying to break into his house.

Martins security chief testified in Los Angeles court on Monday that the rock star is afraid of a woman who has allegedly made repeated attempts to engage with him at his Malibu home.

Terry Abbott told a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge that the alleged stalker, Ariana Joyce, has repeatedly used deception to try and get access to Martin’s home

The Coldplay musician alleges that the woman has left notes at his Malibu residence that allude to death and suicide … and that mention his two children.

The woman appeared in court Monday

And the judge said she was acting disruptively in the courtroom as well.

From the KBUU sports desk … the Malibu Sharks Middle School Surf Team finished in 5th place at the Scholastic Surf Series State Championships held this past weekend in Oceanside.

The Sharks competed against 26 other schools from all over California.

Fifth place is a dramatic improvement from last year, when the team placed 12th. Furthermore, the Sharks out-performed their closest local rival, Cabrillo Middle School in Ventura, for the first time since Coach John Cross took over the team in 2016.

Talia Swindal placed 6th in both the girls shortboard and girls longboard finals.

Talia was one of only 2 girls in the state to make it to both finals, which is amazing.

Austen Gasser placed 5th in the boys longboard Final.

Special mention is also due for Caueh Carter (the only 6th grader to qualify for the State Championship contest).

Also … Dylan Goldberg, Shelby Woodman, and Vanessa Clarke for advancing through multiple heats against an incredibly competitive field of surfers.

Congratulations to all the surfers on The Sharks Surf Team … and John Cross, the Head Coach
