An LASD deputy questions a driver at a DUI checkpoint in 2013.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department has announced a DUI checkpoint to be conducted in Malibu overnight on Fri., Jan. 10 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. An exact location of the checkpoint has not been disclosed.

Drivers will be screened for impaired driving, as well as proper driver’s licenses, by the LA County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu/Lost Hills Station. Drivers caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could face penalties ranging from insurance increases and DUI classes, to jail time, license suspension, and fees that can exceed $10,000.

According to the LASD, crashes that result from the use of alcohol drop by 20 percent on average when well-publicized DUI checkpoints are regularly conducted. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims that DUI checkpoints yield the most effective results of any DUI enforcement strategies, while providing cost savings to the department.

However, numerous checkpoints in Malibu over the last several months have yielded few DUI arrests. The majority of citations pertain to people driving without licenses. Dozens of unlicensed drivers have been arrested and sent to court.
