People who rent vacation houses for hotel rooms in Malibu may pay more taxes … if voters approved an increase in the bed tax.
It’s actually called the transient occupancy tax .. And currently Malibu charges visitors 12% of their B&B bill.
Most cities in the area charges 15%.
Last year, the city collected 2.3 million dolalrs in bed taxes from hotels and motels … plus 2.4 million from short-term residential rentals . like B and Bs.
Increasing the bed tax from 12% to 15% could result in an estimated additional $1.2 million of TOT revenue for the City annually.
The bed tax would have to be approved by voters … a two thirds majority of voters to be exact.

While Malibu may be cancelling projects left and right due to a funding shortage … malibu city councilman Skylar Peak is hoping the city will chip in 2 thosuand dollars for the 2019 Surf Summit event.
The event is coordinated by Senator Henry Stern … to bring children from multiple Boys and Girls Clubs to Malibu to learn how to surf.
The Surf Summit scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Zuma Beach Tower 14. The event will bring children from the greater Los Angeles area, many of whom have never seen the ocean, to Malibu where they will learn how to surf.
In 2017, Senator Stern worked with Malibu Makos on the first event, when 100 children from the Boys and Girls Club in the San Fernando Valley enjoyed a fun day at the beach, learning about surfing, water safety and the importance of taking care of our oceans.
The Council authorized the City’s sponsorship of both the 2017 and 2018 events by allocating $2,000 each year to help offset the costs associated with putting on the event. Councilmember Peak is requesting that the City again sponsor the event by authorizing funding to offset some of the associated costs, which would be allocated from the General Fund Undesignated Reserve.
