LA County Firefighters On Standby For Mexico Quake
L-A County firefighters are gearing up in case they are sent to Mexico.
President Donald Trump has offered U.S. assistance to Mexico … during a phone call Wednesday with President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Tuesday’s 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed more than 200 people.
The White House says in a statement that “The president offered assistance and search-and-rescue teams, which are being deployed now.”
The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team is preparing to join the recovery effort in central Mexico after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed hundreds and collapsed buildings for hundreds of miles.
Though crews have not received an official request for assistance, they spent Wednesday morning preparing their trucks and collecting gear in case they are called up.
Malibu Town Hall On Mass Violence
The City will hold a town hall meeting in a week. … on mass violence.
The city maintains that its residents … like people everywhere in the nation … need to know what to do when an incident takes place at an office, a shopping mall or a public event.
It could be a disgruntled co-worker, domestic violence, or a terrorist attack.
Civilians are often caught in the crossfire.
Experts from the sheriffs office and fire department will speak.
DUI Checkpoints Friday Night in Malibu, SM
Tomorrow night … another impaired driver checkpoint in Malibu…. and one in Santa Monica.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Detail will be conducting a drunken driver and driver’s license checkpoint.
The location is… au usual … not disclosed .
But these are usually held at Pacific Coast Highway and Webb Way.
A similar checkpoint two weeks ago resulted in three arrests and screening of 595 vehicles.
Deputies have been trained to look for … not only drunken drivers … but those high on pot or more-nefarious illegal drugs.
Or even prescription drugs.
They say that in recent years … California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes.
The latest message from the deputies is “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”
They point out that any prescription drug … that you’re supposed to take … may have a label on it that says do not operate machinery.
And taking that prescription drug … and driving … could cause you to be charged with driving under the influence.
Many residents are very unhappy with the checkpoints … and view them as a violation of their individual freedom to be free from intrusive search and seizure.
The U-S Supreme Court has ruled that checkpoints such as this are not a violation of the public’s Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights against intrusive police action and self incrimination.
And … Santa Monica police say they will also hold a checkpoint Friday night.
Their location is not announced.
City Still Talking About Playhouse, Skate Park Site
Negotiations apparently are continuing … as they have for the better part of a year … between the city and the owners of two properties.
In Point Dume … the city remains in negotiations over the Malibu Playhouse … a former church and current theater that been for sale.
And at the civic center … the city is negotiating to buy a plot next door to city hall … for use as a small park or parking lot.
Negotiations for these purchases are secret.
But the city council has not held hearings on real estate acquisition plans … and its planning for additional parks has best been on and off … and at worst contorted and confusing.

Calabasas Will Fill Canyon With 180 Condos
In news from over the hill … Calabasas is evaluating plans for a huge condominium project at the gateway to Malibu … north of Malibu Canyon.
It’s called West Village … at the corner of Malibu Canyon-Las Virgenes Road at Agoura Road.
West Village will include a 5,700-square-foot retail center and 15 three-story buildings with 180 condominiums,.
A canyon will be widened and its height raised to accommodate the buildings…. 45 native oak trees will be cut down.
Calabasas zoning codes apparently allow the housing units …. and the developer had proposed a smaller hotel there … but that was shot down on an election.
Opponents say it’s too big .. and will affect wildlife … as it sits two miles away from the proposed cougar crossing over the 1-0-1 Freeway.
We;ll keep an eye this one.
