Unswayed by public backlash against 2013’s “Blackfish” documentary, Webster Elementary students will be visiting SeaWorld in March for a science-themed overnight field trip, according to the agenda for the Santa Monica – Malibu Unified School District’s Feb. 20 meeting.
The documentary became a household name after A-list musicians began to cancel performances at the marine park, citing SeaWorld’s alleged animal rights abuse and poor management outlined in the film.
In Malibu, the film came to light in December after Pt. Dume fifth grader Kirra Kotler pressured the elementary school to cancel its annual SeaWorld trip, which it later did.
The Pt. Dume fifth graders will now be visiting a coastal watershed in Santa Barbara.
Webster’s fifth graders will be visiting SeaWorld San Diego in March, with another science-themed field trip scheduled for Yosemite in June, according to the SMMUSD meeting agenda.
