This year, three Malibuites qualified to run in the annual Boston Marathon, held on Patriots’ Day, April 15, in Massachusetts.
The local runners were 21-year-old Danielle Binnette, 58-year-old Kathy Chasen-May and 77-year-old Tyson Park.
Organized by the nonprofit organization Boston Athletic Association, the marathon–now in its 123rd year–brings runners from all over the world to race on the 26-mile course, spanning several cities before ending at Copley Square in Boston.
This year’s event marked the sixth anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, when two homemade bombs were set off near the finish line. The explosion killed three people and injured hundreds of others. To honor the victims, the organizers held a moment of silence around the time that the bombs went off at the race six years earlier.
