This critter was spotted crawling around Topanga Canyon last week, trying to keep cool as the temperature ticked higher and higher. The red fire ant was struggling with a piece of colored glass, trying to carry it to its nest up a hill. Apparently, many species of ant “harvest” non-food objects like small pebbles. Researchers are not sure of the purpose—whether it serves to fortify their nests or as a way to keep them clean.
