Letter: Urging Kindness

The Board of The Malibu Special Education Foundation has been supporting children, families and educators for over 15 years.

We are disheartened by the actions of a handful of parents who have taken to emails and cyber bullying a kindergartner with disabilities and his parents.

How ironic that kindergarten contains the word “kinder.” Kindness matters when a family and their child faces life with challenges.

Reach out and support the children and families of our community with empathy and understanding. It’s very difficult to find a path through school and life when faced with the challenges a disability can bring to a family.

Our experience has always been very positive. The Malibu community has rallied behind and supported many of our students as they age through our schools. Who hasn’t seen a Little League kid with challenges hitting his first ball and watched, through tears, as the teammates cheer him on? Or watched the MHS talent show and been blown away by a visually challenged child playing flawless Mozart? What a great lesson for all of us, especially the children both with and without disabilities.

Compassion goes a long way and we have always been proud of our Malibu community for being there, for 15 years, for our families and children with disabilities.

We ask that the perpetrators of this cyber bullying attack on one of our kids to come forward so we can teach them about life with a disability and the importance of diversity and tolerance.

Thank you to our wonderful community for the many years of support.
