Sr. Brigid McGuigan

Sr. Brigid McGuigan, R.S.C., has passed away. She served as Pastoral Associate at Our Lady of Malibu parish for the past 18 years and was the Director of the Christian Initiation Process — a spiritual development process by which adults discern where God is calling them in their life. They are formed in the Catholic tradition and way of life. She was sought out frequently for pastoral counseling and also worked with couples preparing for marriage and with couples in troubled marriages.

Prior to coming to OLM, she taught on the elementary school level, developed and coordinated religious education programs in two parishes, served as Archdiocesan Director for University Campus Ministry for 17 years. Subsequently she worked as a consultant to religious communities and parishes throughout the U.S., Canada, England and Ireland in the areas of staff development, planning and conflict resolution.

Above all, many sought her out as a friend and spiritual guide.

She was born the third of nine children on Sept. 1, 1924, in County Derry, Northern Ireland.  She entered the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1947 in Ireland. Prior to coming to the United States, she worked with troubled adolescent girls at two residential centers in England.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Malibu church on Saturday, Aug. 27. The burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 29. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made through Our Lady of Malibu Parish to the Religious Sisters of Charity Fund to Combat Human Trafficking.
