Safe setup for school

There is an opportunity to “get it right” at Malibu High School presented us by the Measure BB funds. Through a series of well-attended public meetings at Malibu High School, concerned parents and residents are cooperating in helping craft the approach to the new school. Those of us with a focus on public safety feel the time is right to correct chronic infrastructure problems that cause dangerous traffic and pedestrian congestion. Current and past news stories, public records and the experiences of parents over decades combine to demand safe access and egress to our schools. Ensuring that a child can safely reach and enter new classrooms and facilities is very important.

In addition, the Malibu campus should be a safe place to evacuate to during our annual wildfires. Proper infrastructure for the normal flows of traffic plus establishing well-facilitated entrance of all sizes of emergency vehicles to the school campus is the first step to planning the rebuilding project. This is as basic a priority as establishing electrical service, a safe water supply and proper sewage disposal. This process should not be unduly rushed nor unduly delayed. We need to get it right the first time because we are all going to have to live with the results of our combined efforts for many, many years. In the final analysis we all want the same thing, a safe and stimulating educational environment for our children.
