In what’s been labeled as a mortality “crisis,” the California Wildlife Center is still in need of volunteers and donations to help care a record number of beached sea lions and elephant seals that have washed up in Los Angeles County this year.

The CWC in Calabasas is set to finish construction at the end of April on a temporary shelter to take in the overflow of animals being housed in San Pedro shelters.

Approximately 1,000 malnourished sea lions have been picked up in Southern California this year, with 118 of them from Malibu, according to Victoria Harris, board president of the CWC.

The CWC is offering several avenues for the public to help during the crisis, including signing up for the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk on the Wild Side at Zuma Beach in Malibu on May 5.

“We encourage you all to help us reach our $30,000 fundraising goal by involving your family, friends and co-workers; and asking for their support,” a CWC statement said.

Those interested in volunteering at the Wildlife Center can attend free training sessions, with the first scheduled for Sat., April 20 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and a third session Wed., April 24 at 6 p.m.

Monetary and equipment donations are also welcomed. For a list of equipment needed, visit the CWC’s Amazon Wishlist.

The CWC reminds the public to immediately report injured animals seen on or near the beach by calling the Animal Rescue hotline 310-458-WILD (9453). Details for responders can be found on the CWC website at http://www.cawildlife.org.
