Although not submitted to be featured in the “Art of the Board” exhibit, Drew Brophy shared examples of surfboard art that are similar to what the City of Malibu will display at City Hall.

Are you a local artist or designer in search of your next project? The Malibu Cultural Commission’s “Art of the Board” surfboard art installation is now accepting submissions. The installation will compile artistic surfboards created by local artists to celebrate Malibu’s surfing culture in honor of the city’s 25th anniversary.

The City of Malibu is seeking unique surfboards that tell a story or are visually compelling. Pieces will be selected for the installation based on artistic design and may include drawings, paintings or graphics. Selections that are chosen will be suspended vertically from the lobby ceiling.

Graphic artist John Van Hamersveld will be present at the March 28 grand opening and will design a special poster to commemorate the installation. Van Hamersveld gained fame for his poster for the 1966 film “Endless Summer,” and has designed album covers for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Surfboards may be submitted for consideration through Feb. 5. Call 310.456.2489 for more information.
