Malibu CAN’s recent letter campaign to bulwark Ozzie Silna is a feeble smokescreen for his real aim of delivering control of Malibu’s City Council to the Coastal Commission troika of Sara Wan, Peter Douglas and eco-Taliban lobbyist Susan Jordan (wife of Commissioner Pedro Nava). Here are the facts.
Wan, a Malibu resident and sitting Commissioner, is chief architect of the Commission’s attempted power grab over Malibu. Wan recently formed W.A.N., a group dedicated to prying open every beach lot in Malibu to public access and stopping scuba divers from diving off the coast by claiming submerged lands belong to Native American tribes as sacred underwater sites. Joining Wan and her husband on the 11-person board of her other radical group, Vote the Coast, is the Sierra Club’s Mark Massara, a chronic Malibu critic, and the Malibu CAN duo, Ozzie Silna and Steve Uhring.
Silna and Uhring have consistently endorsed the oppressive Coastal Commission-authored LCP while opposing allowing residents to vote on the enormous plan. Yet they have no problem urging residents to vote for these hand-picked, Malibu CAN-endorsed city council candidates:
Jay Liebig: Sued the city four times, once to stop an LCP referendum by the same voters he now wants to put him on the council. Liebig’s most memorable public act in Malibu was spouting obscenities at a city council meeting two years ago before fleeing to New York.
Bill Winokur: Relative newcomer and political novice. Winokur is campaigning against Measure M even though we already voted on it. Doesn’t yet have a position on more pressing issues like the LCP because he hasn’t read it.
Walt Keller: Twice elected and twice rejected for micromanaging of staff and unwelcome meddling in the affairs of local homeowners.
Malibu CAN wants these candidates to run our lives. The leaders of Malibu CAN are in bed with Sara Wan and the Coastal Commission. The Coastal Commission is intent on subverting our democracy. Make no mistake, a vote for a Malibu CAN-endorsed candidate is tantamount to supporting a Coastal Commission-plotted coup of our city council. Think about that before you vote.
