  • =   The sheriff’s office may not be sending enough deputies to Malibu …
  • =   The national news media picks up on the story … U-2’s David Evans loses his request to build houses above Billionaire’s Beach.
  • =    Two Congressman want a federal investigation into airplane noise … and the F A A .
  • =    The Malibu Surfside News has screwed up on legal ads … and may lose its city contract.

This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

The cities contract with Malibu’s police agency expires in 10 days. … and negotiations are just about to begin on renewing the contract. There are times when the sheriffs office fails to provide enough deputies. The city wants minimum staffing in the contract.  Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/contract-talks-with-sheriff/

——

The national news media are picking up the story we had two weeks ago … that U-2 guitarist David Evans has lost his effort to build a compound of houses in the mountains above Billionaires Beach.  And if “The Edge” wants to apply again … he has to start at Malibu City Hall.  Details:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/new-road-to-the-edges-pad/

Plans for road improvements … sewer lines and other capital projects are being reviewed … in light of the Woolsey Fire.

There are 42 individual projects on the city’s five year wish list.

Total cost would be 125 million dollars … and there obviously is not that much money in the budget right now.

But that’s a fuve year list … and the city will be in much better financial shape when and if fire damage money is recovered from the federal government and Southern California Edison.

The city’s budget crunch has delayed a major item … the proposed adding of solar panels to Malibu’s City Hall.

Several road projects are planned in the Pacific Coast Highway Safety Plan.

Eleven other projects include the annual street repaving projects … widening Civic Center Way … removing a bottleneck on Kanan Dume Road going up the hill from P C H … building new medians on P C H … and putting in angle parking and a sea wall on Westward Beach Road.

The whole wish list goes to the city council on Monday.

You are listening to the latest news from Radio Malibu … F-M 99 point 1 K B U U.  ((( time  ))))

——

Airplane noise continues to plague Eastern Malibu and the Topanga Canyon area … as the F A A  continues to reroute aircraft approach and departure routes.

Now … to southern California congressmen are asking for a federal investigation into nationwide complaints about new flight paths.

Representatives Adam Schiff  and Brad Sherman want the U.S. Government Accountability Office to investigate how the FAA has handled the noise concerns raised by people across the country during the implementation of NextGen … the new aviation routing system.

In the interest of conserving fuel and shortening air routes … many neighborhoods we’re traditionally quiet are now being over flown repeatedly.

The Hollywood Burbank airport is now the source of major complaints for people living south of Ventura Blvd. in the valley.

The west Adams District in midtown Los Angeles is being over flown by dozens of low flying aircraft on approach to LAX.

And departing aircraft from LAX are now turning earlier and banking over eastern Malibu.

The congressmen want to know how the FAA considers noise impacts zs it changes flight paths.

Also … how the F A A incorporates public input when planning and implementing NextGen.

——

The City of Malibu is unhappy with the legal ads being published by the Malibu Surfside News … and the city council is being asked to switch over to the Malibu Times.

You might recall that the Surfside News complained biterly two years ago … when the Malibu Times won the contract to run legal ads that the city is required to run in a newspaper.

The Surfside News … owned by a newspaper chain in the Chicago suburbs … won the contract.

But the city says the Surfside News has screwed up.

“There have been several occasions when the paper failed to properly publish the correct notice, resulting in postponed public hearings and additional staff time…” says the city.

“While Malibu Surfside News has made good faith efforts to correct the matter, staff does not recommend awarding” the contract to the Surfisde News again.

The city buys big display ads in both newspapers to publicize events … the legal notices are a relatively-small expense.

The Surfside News has closed its local office … and is edited in Illinois.

It has also put its news and legal ads behind a paywall on the internet … defeating the purpose of a city buying ads in the newspaper.

Full disclosure … K B U U and the Malibu Times have a news content exchange agreement and K B U U publishes its Newswire at the Malibu Times website.
