Varsity Sharks beat Nordhoff, move to 5-1 in league play

The Malibu High School varsity baseball team defeated Nordhoff High School 5-3, moving the team to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Sharks are now tied with St. Bonaventure for first place in league play.

The Sharks earned the win on Friday behind the pitching of senior Harry McAlevey who moves to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference play. McAlevey pitched six innings while only giving up three runs, while Noah Simon pitched the seventh, ending the rally and earning his second conference save.

The conference’s leading hitter, Malibu’s Jordan Simon, went 3-4, as did senior outfielder Hunter Johnson. Evan Anthony had two hits, including a two-out, bases-loaded double in the first inning that put Nordhoff down 3-0. Thanks to the early hits and strong defense, the Sharks held the lead throughout the game.

Sophomore shortstop Chase Lambert made a great defensive play with two runners on in the seventh inning, helping secure the win for the Sharks, and the save for fellow sophomore Noah Simon. Additionally, Matt Gruskin contributed two hits toward the team’s win.

With one out and runners at first and second, sophomore Chris Falk crushed the ball for a double, scoring both Simoneau and Anthony. Sophomore Troy Schlobohm had a good day at the plate with three singles and a stolen base. Freshman pitcher Andre Simoneau had another strong outing, allowing no walks and striking out seven players. Sophomore Sam Yang pitched the last inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
