Bill addresses PCH speeding

The next hurdle for AB1009 is a very high one. This is the Fran Pavley-sponsored bill that would make Pacific Coast Highway a double fine zone from Topanga to Decker Canyon and would require Caltrans to consider other specified factors when conducting an engineering and traffic survey which is used to set speed limits. These factors would include residence driveways that feed directly onto the highway and the narrow shoulders of the highway, which serve as space for on-street parking and paths for pedestrians and bicycles.

AB1009 has made it through the Assembly and passed the Senate Transportation Committee. On July 8, it will be heard by the Senate Public Safety Committee, which appears to be strongly opposed to double fine zones and thus, this bill. We need the community of Malibu to send letters in support of this legislation. Please mail or fax your letter to Senator Bruce McPherson, chair, Senate Public Safety Committee, State Capitol, Room B-31, Sacramento, CA., 95814. Fax: 916-445-8081.

PCH has become a nightmare. We’ve been trying to slow down traffic for the 40 years I’ve lived here, without much success. If we can get this bill passed, it will be a beginning. Write your letter today.
