Once again, Coastal Commission Executive Director Peter Douglas reveals himself to be a hypocrite of astronomical proportions. Just as the Coastal Commission itself was doing Malibu a rare favor by condemning BHP’s proposed Cabrillo Port project, Douglas was again on the warpath for public beach access at Lechuza Beach.
Douglas’ exact quote from the April 19 Malibu Times: “… people are being prevented from enjoying the resource they paid for.” Ironically, this is precisely the line of reasoning that homeowners have repeatedly used every time commission staff launched a frontal assault on their constitutional property rights with such lunacy as “view rights” for boaters.
But Douglas never bothers to defend his double standard. Truth and justice are both relative concepts, depending on whatever the Earth Goddess whispers to him through the trees on any given day.
And for those who are keeping count, Douglas’ reign of terror will enter its 23rd year this July, the second-longest unelected tenure in the Western Hemisphere (Fidel Castro still holds the top spot).
And that tenure shows no sign of coming to an end any time soon, despite all the lip service about “democracy” and “representation” we’re always getting from commissioners and elected officials.
Fortunately, it’s never to late to grow a backbone.
