The Malibu Times publisher Karen York was honored Tuesday afternoon as Woman of the Year at the Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue. York was singled out for her many years of community service in Malibu and at MJCS. Fifty women gathered to honor York at the first annual Women’s Seder held before the actual Passover holiday in April. The Women’s Seder told the traditional tale of Passover and the Jewish people’s liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt, but from a feminist point of view. Readings from former Senator Barbara Boxer, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Jewish poet Emma Lazarus whose poem, “The New Colossus,” adorns the Statue of Liberty, were recited. The event ended with participants pledging to do more community service.
