Teed off by pollution

Surfriders, beachgoers and Malibuites! We urge you to join us this Friday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m., at the Malibu Lagoon lifeguard tower for a rally for “No more sickness at Malibu Surfrider Beach.” Too many of our friends got sick from the polluted water at Surfrider, and this rally will send a message that we need to get that pollution cleaned up now. If you or your friends have gotten sick from using these polluted waters, you need to make your voice heard this Friday.

Our guest speakers will highlight the fact that for more than a decade now, Jerrold Perenchio, self-proclaimed “environmentalist” (source: LA Times, 7/10/03), head of Univision and major political contributor, has been keeping his private golf course by Malibu Lagoon green by pouring highly toxic carcinogens (pesticides and fertilizer) directly into Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach. The California Coastal Commission, Governor Gray Davis, the Malibu City Council, LA County Health Services and the Regional Water Quality Control Board now know about this source of pollution but have not done anything to stop it.

Over the past 11 years, our friends Eric Villa Nueva, Ralph Gambina and Walt Lagatolla allegedly died from swallowing the water when the Lagoon was opened to the surf. Other victims contracted stomach, skin, eye, ear, and/or throat infections as a result of surfing or swimming at Malibu Surfrider Beach. Too many people have died, too many people have gotten sick. Cleaning up the pollution will protect your health, the health of your children and the health of the millions who visit Surfrider every year.

Surfers, Malibuites and beachgoers, we need to send a message that “We ain’t gonna take it no more!” Let’s all get together and stop this major source of pollution from the golf course now!
