In its second rescue call in less than 12 hours, the Malibu Search and Rescue Team helped get two young, injured hikers to safety on Friday morning.
A rescue call came in at 9:40 a.m. for two 12-year-olds, one male and the other female, who became stuck on a cliff above Malibu’s Tapia Park.
Crews from Malibu Search and Rescue, California State Parks and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded and determined both victims would need to be airlifted due to their injuries. The girl was “disoriented” and suffering from heat exhaustion, according to SAR. The boy suffered an ankle injury.
An air team performed a “winch rescue” to get the girl into the helicopter, which flew her to UCLA Trauma Center. An LA County Fire helicopter “winched” out the boy and two firefighters who had climbed to assist him.
The children were hiking with a larger group of kids and adults from a local camp, according to SAR.
This was Malibu Search and Rescue’s 71st rescue of 2014. Last year, the team made 95 rescues total.
