Pepperdine volleyball wins second tournament, enters top 25

The Pepperdine University women’s volleyball team is off to its best start since the 2000 season following a second consecutive weekent tournament win. The Waves’ claim of the Oregon States Asics Classic brought their record to 6-0. Pepperdine was voted this week into the AVCA top 25 with a No. 24 ranking.

Pepperdine defeated Oregon State in the tournament championship on Sunday, 3-2 (25-15, 27-25, 19-25, 21-25, 15-11). The Waves also defeated No. 17 Colorado State and Pacific University in the tournament.

The Pepperdine-Oregon State match will be shown on FSN Prime Ticket on Thursday at 9:30 p.m.

Senior outside hitter Julie Rubenstein was named tournament MVP for the second consecutive week. She hit .482 (31-4-56) against the Beavers and also had 12 digs and three service aces. For the tournament, she averaged 5.2 kills and hit .359. Rubenstein was also named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Others Waves named to the all-tournament team were junior setter Kiah Fiers, who had 65 assists and 11 digs against the Beavers and averaged 11.3 assists in the three matches, and junior outside hitter Rachel Lumsden, who had 17 kills and 11 digs on Sunday and averaged 3.4 kills and 2.4 digs.

The Waves will be on the road for the third straight weekend, as they next take part in the Nevada AT&T Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Pepperdine will face UC Davis, Missouri and the host Wolf Pack.
