Bob “Con Ugly” Purvey has been a hero of mine at Malibu Point since I was old enough to kook out in 1962. He has been an inspiration to three generations of surfers, as well as those Malibu residents who see him as a spokesman for the preservation of the Malibu coastline. I am proud to call him a friend and someone whom I deeply respect. I say this as a longtime Los Angeles County lifeguard and Malibu surfer of some 46 years.
There is a place for watermen and great surfers like Bob Purvey. He will always be welcome in that very special Valhalla for those who have loved the challenge of our cherished sport, performed at the highest level of achievement, and decided to do whatever it takes to insure that future generations of surfers can live the Malibu dream of perfection and world class waves.
I will support Bob Purvey in all his endeavors, especially on the need to restore the wetland (nature’s treatment plant) and reduce traffic into this sensitive habitat area, and certainly encourage others to do so.
