Malibu High Girls tennis team
co-champs in Frontier LeagueFor the first time in MHS history, the girls tennis team not only had a winning record but were Frontier League co-champs as well. The 2002 squad went on to win its first ever CIF team match before losing to Magnolia High in the second round.
Leading the Sharks team was No. 1 singles player Kelly Stewart (34-2) who lost only two matches all season. Megan Zweig, the No. 2 singles player, had a great season as well with a record of 32-7.
The No. 1 doubles team, Whitney Hogestyn and Elizabeth Martin, and the No. 2 doubles team, Lisa-Marie Kohrs and Megan Zweig, lost only five matches during the year.
The season ended with Stewart as Frontier League champion, and Megan and Casey Zweig as the doubles finalists. All players qualified for CIF individual playoffs. Stewart, Casey and Megan Zweig, Hogestyn and Kohrs were All-Frontier First-Team selections.
With only two seniors on the team and several top players joining the team next year, Malibu High Girls Tennis should be even tougher.
The team is coached by Malibu Racquet Club tennis pro John McCampbell who is assisted by coaches Chris Reautinger and Bruce Young.
Cross-country running or skiing?Miriam Hodgins (back, third from left) and her UCSD Triton Teammates at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.
A pre-race storm left 3 inches of snow on the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship course at the Brookside Golf Course in Ashland, Ohio, presenting a holiday delight for spectators and headaches for the runners including Malibu local, Miriam Hodgins.
Miriam (Mimi) Hodgins, a 2002 Malibu High School graduate and freshman member of the Varsity Cross Country team at UC San Diego, and her six teammates participated in the championship race this Saturday, Nov. 23, having qualified as one of the top three teams in the Western U.S. Region.
The team, running with long sleeved shirts, gloves and watch caps, were muddy and cold by race’s end, but delighted to have finished for the first time as one of the top 20 teams in the United States. Miriam’s next challenge will be as a member of the UCSD Track and Field team in the spring.
Record falls as Bruin teams ready for nationalsBy John Mills
The L.A. Westside Bruin Mity-Mites ended up with a third place finish in Valley Conference play this year thanks to an 18-6 victory over the Pacoima Wildcats Saturday at Palisades High School. The win gave the Bruins an 8-2 record for the season and motivation to do well at the National Youth Football Championships in Las Vegas this week.
Eleven-year-old Mity-Mite quarterback Dex Lucci threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Dominique Sandifer and All-Conference tailback Marquee Watson ran 30 yards for the other score.
Lucci ended the 10-game season with 28 touchdown passes thus breaking the Bruin club record set 10 years ago by Josh Morgan, the former Santa Monica High football and baseball star.
Things didn’t run as smoothly for the Bruin Tiny-Mites. Following in the footsteps of their mentors, the UCLA Bruins, the boys lost a tough one to the Trojans of University Park by a score of 12-0. The Bruin Pee-Wee team lost to Chatsworth.
Despite their defeats last weekend, both Tiny-Mite and Pee-Wee Bruin teams will also play in the Vegas tournament this week by virtue of their past season’s record.
