Malibu Township Council has decided that, when they don’t like something that other people voted for, they will sue using an anonymous “rich friend’s” money. This is a sad way to promote a position. The Trancas Park is a case in point. There were 29 meetings and workshops before the plan for Trancas Park was voted on. Along comes MTC in the final hour making a desperate last attempt to derail a much needed and desired pocket park for the Western end of Malibu.
The second case is the Trancas Market. They are trying to paint the developer as a greedy Simon Legree. They don’t allow for the truth, which is that every developer is not the devil any more than every lawyer or doctor or accountant is. Dan Bercu is a family man who lives and is bringing up his kids in this community. He wants to design a Napa barn-style “green” shopping center, only adding 30% more retail, including two restaurants. If the MTC drives him away he could wind up selling the land to a hotel developer who does not live in Malibu and it will serve them right. Malibu cannot continue to survive MTC’s refusal to abide by the votes of the majority.
Most of the items that the MTC are against are not going to stop the coyotes from howling or whales and dolphins from jumping. However, they are going to stop the sounds of kids playing, families dining and shopping locally, keep people spending more time outdoors and perhaps, in the end, create more development.
