The ongoing nightly closure of the Malibu Canyon Road tunnel is officially over.
“The construction work inside the Malibu Canyon Road tunnel is finished and the overnight closure (from 9 p.m.) of the tunnel is over,” reads an alert from the City of Malibu sent to subscribers Thursday afternoon.
Construction on the tunnel began on Jan. 4 and was estimated to be finished by August 2015, meaning the completion of the project clocks in two months ahead of schedule.
The $3 million project included improvements to the tunnel’s interior lining and roadway repair meant to enhance comfort and vehicle safety. There are also reported water quality benefits with the construction of a vegetated swale, which filters pollutants from stormwater and helps replenish groundwater.Â
