The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District released an update on winter sampling activities performed at the campuses of Malibu High and Juan Cabrillo Elementary schools to monitor the levels of PCBs present.

Forty-nine air samplings were conducted in 31 classrooms at MHS and JCES. Approximately 212 surface wipe samples were collected from 32 rooms. The samples were initially conducted from Dec. 20-29, 2014 and then again on Jan. 4 and Jan. 11-12.

The report by Environ, the school district’s environmental consultant, concluded that the cleaning practices at both campuses have led to indoor sample test results that fall below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s exposure thresholds. As a result of testing, all classrooms were deemed safe for students and staff to occupy.

The Board of Education will host a study session on both schools at its meeting on March 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Malibu City Hall. There, the board will hear a report from Environ, detailing the investigations. The board will also discuss plans for moving forward, including the removal and replacement of caulk in four classrooms and the woodshop at MHS by June 30.
