Rain … is coming overnight to Malibu … up to as half inch possible …

The fancy 16 room hotel down at Nobu is finally supposed to open this month.

More storm closures coming this weekend.

And fond memories in Malibu …. of Don Rickles——

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the Friday edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu!

——

Former Malibu resident Don Rickles is being remembered fondly here ,… in his hometown for decades.

Rickles died this week at his home in Los Angeles .. he was 90.

He used to live on Point Dume … and before that in the beach colony.

Don Rickles may be best known to the younger generation as the voice of Mister Potato Head in the Toy Story movies.

“I sit in a booth and just do me” … Rickles told U S A Today.

”It’s a beautiful check,” he said of the toy character.

But that character was simply an extension of the persona that the night club comic created in the 1950s … and that he cultivated on television for generations.

Malibu musician Bill Bixler writes that Rickles invited hime and his singer wife … Leslie Bixler …  over to chat at his table after one gig at the olf Beaurivage.

Says Bixler: “What a nice man he was, funny but so much softer than his stage persona.

… he was so aware, as many comedians are, of the BS and used it in his act.

“The cool thing was, he wasn’t that guy on a one to one.”

Bill Bixler … one of many people commenting on the life of Don Rickles … who died at age 90 this week in Los Angeles.

A stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard will be closed Saturday and Sunday as Caltrans crews continue to stabilize slopes that were left weakened by storms that lashed the area in January.

The road, also known as state Route 27, will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive, according to Caltrans.

Crews will be working to secure the hillsides along the roadway, taking steps such as drilling into rocks and placing bolts to stabilize the slopes.following the storms that led to some mud flows that blocked the street.

During the closures, Caltrans will also be doing work north of the affected area on Topanga Canyon Boulevard guard rails, possibly resulting in closures of the shoulder and up to one lane of traffic.

——

On Malibu Canyon Rod … three more days of daytime lane closures near the tunnel.

County road crews say they need to work through Monday … the last day that traffic will be tied up between 9 and 4.

Storm damage has caused the month-long effort to shore up cliffs above the canyon road.

And on Kanan Dume Road … the uphill passing lane remains closed at the first hill heading south from the 1-0-1 Freeway.

Traffic is slowed to 35 miles per hour in the area where a dirt cliff looks like it will come down.

After a remodeling that went on and on and on … the Nobu Ryokan Malibu hotel is sending out press releases that it is about to open.

The owners say the uberluxury resort … with 16 rooms… has been completely transformed from a 1950’s vintage beach motel into an exclusive destination retreat.

The property features 16 uniquely-designed accommodations over two stories, offering panoramic views and enveloping a serene ocean-facing courtyard with a lush garden displaying native California plants.

It describes a thoughtful design concept which balances the flow of energy, neutral color palette and organic materials.

It is supposed to open April 28.

Its web site is not accepting reservations … and it does not quote the rate to stay there.

Meanwhile comes news that the rock artist Sting has decided not to spend this summer at his beach house in Malibu … which is now for rent.

It is described as an otherwise modern Malibu beach house ithat has been transformed nto a southwestern, Moroccan, Indian commune of sorts.

The former front man for the Police has turned it into a Moroccan styled beach pad.

The seven-bed, 10 bathroom estate is for rent for $200,000 per month this summer.
