The Malibu City Council is expected to approve Monday the use of set aside funds for the Malibu Library in 2014, including funding to continue the library’s speaker series.

The Library Subcommittee, comprised of Mayor Joan House and Councilwoman Laura Rosenthal, recommended that the Council approve $350,000 for the library to continue regular service operations and maintenance work and to fund a part-time Teen Librarian. That amount also includes $100,000 specifically designated for the Malibu Library Speaker Series program, according to an agenda report.

The Library Subcommittee decided to cap expenditures for the speaker series at $100,000 last month. The series will bring 10 speakers from a variety of fields to the Malibu Library in 2014. Potential speakers include local filmmaker Tom Shadyac, food writer Amelia Saltsman and motivational speaker Jessie Billauer.

The library is funded by a portion of property taxes set aside specifically designated for Malibu Library expenses by a 2008 Memorandum of Understanding between the city and Los Angeles County.  There is currently $2.6 million in the set aside funds, and that is expected to increase by $1 million annually until 2019.  Funds were previously used to renovate the library.Â
