Supt To Issue ‘Clarification’ In Santa Monica Ploy Re: Divorce
The pot is boiling in Malibu as parent activists react to last week’s unofficial decision by the school board to reverse course on a separate school district for Malibu.
Parents are organizing a show of force at the November 16 school board meeting.
Last week … the board decided informally not to back a separate district … but to instead send the district superintendent out to Malibu to gauge reaction on some sort of autonomy for the four Malibu campuses.
If that doesn’t work … the district members from Santa Monica said they would revisit the issue of financial payments from Malibu to Santa Monica after a district divorce.
Money is already flowing from Malibu to support Santa Monica schools … and Malibu representatives have offered to formalize and continue that financial arrangement should the two school District separate.
The school district spokeswoman says the superintendent … Doctor Ben Drati … is going to issue what she called a clarification on the matter.
Meanwhile … parent leaders are seething.
“Malibu (teachers and parents) have to drive to SANTA MONICA for everything.
“To attend meetings.
“To get fingerprinted to be able to volunteer in our childrens’ schools.
“It’s usually at LEAST 3 hours round-trip. Just inconceivable,” writes one.
Writes another … Malibu students do not receive equal services.
Santa Monica has a dual immersion school and a project based learning school.
Samohi offers an Ethnic Studies course … not available in Malibu.”
She points out that the noncontiguous section of Malibu would be illegal under the state education code … if not grandfathered in by an accident of history.

City To Hash Out Neighborhood Character Mon at 4:30
Neighborhood character.
To the average person … what that really means is mansionization … the process of building houses as big as possibly allowable…. even if they’re bigger than others in a neighborhood.
This discussion if often held in cities around the nation.
Next Monday … at 4:30 … the city council and planning commission will meet together to iron out the issue of neighborhood character.
Malibu has a set of codes … setbacks … height limits … things like that … that set limits on how big a new house can be on any particular lot.
The problem … many builders are maxxing out … designing houses that squeeze right up against the upper limit.
In some neighborhoods … that creates eyesores that actually diminish property values … and obstruct views.
Of the last 20 approved houses … half of them were at exactly 100 percent of the maximum allowed space … or close to it.
Malibu also has a Local Coastal Program imposed onto us by the Coastal Commission.
And it requires City Hall to also consider neighborhood character … in addition to the meximum square footage allowed by codes.
But until the last election … that wasn’t happening.
Planning Commissioners are now turning down otherwise-legal houses … because they’re way too big.
But that is at best a vague neighborhood character definition.
That has the builders and architects enraged.
The city council and planning commission will meet together … Monday at 4:30 in the afternoon … to hash this one out.
Caltrans Road Flares Started OC Fire – LA Times
Remember those two brushfires … two weeks apart … along the 91 Freeway in Orange County?
25 structures burned … including more than a dozen homes.
Turns out the first fire was started by a road flare that had been put on the freeway by Caltrans … and the second one was started by a lingering ember from the first fire.
This according to reporting in the Los Angeles Times.
The Canyon 1 fire ignited September 25 … and was declared out October 4th,
Except it wasn’t out … a week later an ember hidden in the scorched oak brush was blown 80 feet by the wind and started a second wildfire … known as Canyon 2.
Some critics have said fire officials did not respond to the Canyon 2 fire aggressively enough. Both the Orange County Board of Supervisors and the board of the Orange County Fire
Also … the Canyon 2 fire broke out as firefighters across the West were flooding into Northern California to battle a series of deadly blazes that had exploded the previous night.
Among those traveling to wine country was the crew in Anaheim Hills, nearest where the Canyon 2 fire would ultimately begin.
The crew had left amid red-flag conditions and without their positions being backfilled by other firefighters.
That was the Orange County Fire Authority decision.
Caltrans … for its part … says it is reevaluating its policy on using road flares in places where brush chokes the area adjacent to a freeway.
The entire story is online … we have a link to it on the KBUU Newswire.

Xmas Drive Starts, Aims At Steering Towards Hope
The Malibu Task Force on Homelessness and The People Concern are joining with the City of Malibu to hold a Holiday Donation Drive.
Items to keep fellow human beings warm at night are appreciated.
Collection bins marked with The People Concern’s logo will be located in the upper and lower lobbies of City Hall.
Remember the neediest among us by donating items that can be put to use by The People Concern’s Malibu Homeless Outreach Team.
The donated items are not simply handouts.
The idea is for the team members to give people living in the streets and gullies of Malibu items they need … to build trust, and work to connect them with crucial wraparound services and housing.
The Outreach Team would be particularly grateful for items they can put to use right away:
as:
– Winter clothing – like jackets, sweaters, and waterproof ponchos)
– Socks/underwear (new and unused)
– Non-perishable snacks (beef jerky, protein bars, granola bars, etc.)
– Cleansing wipes
Homeless residents need to be convinced to accept much-needed services such as medical care, mental health care, and substance abuse services – with the ultimate goal of finding and maintaining permanent housing.
The Holiday Drive donation bins will be available in City Hall starting Moncay … until January 15, 2018.
