After starting their season with two consecutive victories, the Malibu High School girls varsity basketball team went to Viewpoint School for a disappointing five-day tournament, where they lost three games and won one. In the first game, the Sharks were defeated by Milken High School, the eventual tournament champions, 58 – 31. Malibu won the second game against Viewpoint School, 56-49. The game was even until the final three minutes, when Malibu’s Marie and Helena Vazelakis and co-captains Daniel Bush and Hannah Robinson made seven of eight timely foul shots and three field goals to nail down the win. The Sharks’ leading scorers were Bush, with 19 points, and Vazelakis, with 13 points.
St. Genevive defeated Malibu in the third game 51-42, despite Bush’s game-high 27 points. Then, in the Sharks’ final game against their Frontier League rival, Carpenteria, Malibu was defeated 41-37. Forward Sierra Zontelli grabbed 12 rebounds, while Bush once again led the Sharks’ scoring with 15 points and was elected to the Tournament All-Star team, as she averaged 17 points per game. Up next, Malibu will travel to Ojai to play The Thatcher School.
