Torrence brief

A group will run and walk Pacific Coast Highway next November in memory of the late Malibu Olympic middle-distance runner David Torrence.

Torrence’s mother, Bianca Torrence, recently announced a team of David’s friends and family will participate in the 10th annual Malibu Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk. Bianca said the gathering is lacing up their sneakers for the 5K portion of the November 4 event because her son keeps inspiring people even though he has passed away.

“He keeps inspiring us and many other people,” the Realtor said. “We want to keep his legacy alive. Be healthy—mind, body and soul.”

David, a professional runner of nearly a decade, was found dead in the pool of a Scottsdale, Ariz. apartment complex on Aug. 28, 2017. His death sent shockwaves in the running community across the globe.

Torrence, who ran collegiately at the University of California at Berkeley, was a successful runner in the U.S. and internationally. He represented Bianca’s home country, Peru, in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, and set several running records for the South American Nation.

Team David Torrence is advocating clean sports and healthy living, Bianca said. She also said Olympians and other elite athletes might make an appearance at the race.

“David was loved by so many people,” she said. “So, friends want to show support.”
