    ——

The Trump administration yesterday dismantled safety rules for offshore oil drilling put in place by the Obama administration.

The Obama rules came after the disastrous BP oil spill fouled the Gulf of Mexico nearly a decade ago.

The rollbacks are a major victory for the oil and gas industry

The final version of the changes to Well Control Rules come shortly after the Interior Department said it was pushing back plans to open up vast new areas of coastline for oil and gas exploration in federal waters, a move that would delay the controversial expansion until after the 2020 election.

Green groups are studying the rules and looking for flaws they can challenge with lawsuits, said Chris Eaton, an attorney for Earthjustice.

Critics are also slamming Interior for a lack of transparency:

The new rules were written by the American Petroleum Institute, a trade association, and they can only be read on the group’s website.

In order to read the new offshore oil rules …. members of the public must register with the trade association on its website and pay a fee.

    ——

Finally this morning … a shark that grows to the length of a small bus may be making a comeback off Malibu.

Basking sharks … huge sharks that do not have teeth and eat only plankton in the ocean …. are being spotted in increasing numbers in the Santa Monica Bay and off the Channel islands in Ventura County.

Christopher Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at CSU Long Beach. tells the Ventura County Star about the recent sightings.

“It has really been 30 years since we’ve seen them in any numbers,” Lowe told the Star.

The newspaper reports that basking sharks used to be found by the hundreds … maybe thousands … off the local coast.

But their population plummeted after the 1960s.

The sharks were targeted by fisheries … and in some cases … sharks were killed to prevent them from getting tangled up in fishing nets.

That practice ended decades ago … the sharks were protected by law …  but the population failed to rebound.

    Until now.

The big sharks move a lot … one that was tagged in Monterey Bay swam to the tip of Baja.

The story is reported in the Ventura County Star: https://www.vcstar.com/story/news/special-reports/outdoors/2019/05/01/sharks-ventura-california-coast-reported-basking-sightings-increase/3556886002/
