Mays' Landing hits the market

A Malibu home owned by UCLA and known as “Mays’ Landing” at Point Dume is on the market for a minimum bid of $11.95 million.

Last year, the Daily Bruin reported the 3-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home was in poor condition and annual upkeep was costing the school approximately $100,000. The university said the home had been appraised for $7.9 million and planned on selling it at the time, but it didn’t hit the market until mid-March this year.

The 3,284-square-foot home sits on a 1.3-acre lot.

Psychiatric experts Philip and Genevieve May bought the Cliffside Drive home above Little Dume Beach in the 1950s and were wed at the house in 1959. Philip May worked as a schizophrenia expert at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute. When he died in 1986, Genevieve opened up their home to UCLA faculty and staff to use for retreats and other gatherings, including Sunday afternoon music recitals, according to the Daily Bruin. UCLA was donated full control of Mays’ Landing in 2004 when she passed away.

Proceeds from the sale will go to UCLA’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.

The school is asking for sealed envelope offers of at least $11.95 million to be submitted by May 21. The highest bidder wins the property.
