MHS water polo loses CIF quarterfinal match

The girls volleyball teams’ post-season run ended earlier in the week.

The Malibu High School boys water polo team’s season came to an end Saturday following a tough battle with Arroyo Grande. The Sharks lost, 16-9.

The fourth-seeded Eagles were led by Jessie Gillespie, who scored five goals. Malibu’s Jake Philbrick was the top scorer for the Sharks with three goals. Sean Merrick and Carter Baldwin had two scores apiece. Shark goalie Michael Galate had eight saves.

Malibu won its first-round game on Thursday against Rio Mesa, 12-10. Jake Philbrick and Carter Baldwin had multiple goals to propel the Sharks to victory in that game.

On Tuesday, the school’s girls volleyball team fell in its first-round playoff match against Chadwick, 3-0. The Sharks completed the regular season with a 9-1 record, capturing the Frontier League championship.
