Refutes Times quote

The Malibu Times article “Some say Sierra Club under ‘hijack’ attempt” (February 18, 2004) misquoted me in an article about a member of the Sierra Club’s Board of Directors and a candidate in the current election for a seat on the board. I told your reporter that I did not know board member Marcia Hanscom personally and that I had never met the candidate in question, Roy van de Hoek. In fact, at the time I talked to your reporter, I didn’t even know Mr. van de Hoek’s name. My actual comment was that I hadn’t heard anything about him.

As a staff member of the Sierra Club, I have no role in the board election process and it would be inappropriate for me to make comments of a personal nature about any board member or member or the Sierra Club. I have been a journalist and a communications professional for over 23 years and have never previously complained about being misquoted, but the comment attributed to me in this article was a complete fabrication. The Malibu Times owes the subjects of the article an apology.
