In response to the letter “Road safety” published on May 3.
I am writing in response to the letter to the editor regarding Road Safety on Kanan Dume Road and the traffic signal being installed at Mulholland Highway by the LA County Department of Public Works. I have a totally different viewpoint from the previous writer.
I have been riding on Kanan in cars and motorcycles since 1970. I have seen many improvements since then, including roadway widening, tunnel repairs, lighting, better pavement, guardrail, signage and more. The road is much better and safer now than it was in 1970. However, with these improvements to the infrastructure comes a faster speed limit. Although it is posted at 55 miles per hour, I agree that speeding is the norm.
I have witnessed accidents at Kanan and Mulholland, and many near misses. I am looking forward to completion of the traffic signal. I also agree that there should be adequate advance warning signage and lighting.
But let’s not attack the county for trying to improve the safety. Personally, I would rather see the speed limit reduced, but I know that’s not going to happen. I would also like to see more tickets being written but there is only so much the California Highway Patrol can do. I never exceed the 55 miles per hour limit. Never. And the funny part is that when I arrive at Agoura Road, I often pull next to the speeders, who went flying by me.
So, I am looking forward to the signal, even if it needs some adjustments afterward. Let’s ticket the speeders. Thank you, LA Department of Public Works and thank you, California Highway Patrol. Keep doing what you can to make us all safer out there.
