Hundreds of bikes fill the parking lot of Malibu Bluffs Park on a Sunday in 2016 during the Ride to the Flags.

Now in its 11th year, the Ride to the Flags will take place this Saturday, Sept. 8. The event, sponsored by the White Heart Foundation, starts in Ventura County and ends in the City of Malibu.

The event begins at the Naval Base at Point Mugu for a 9/11 memorial event, which starts at 9:45 a.m. The ride to Malibu, along Pacific Coast Highway, is expected to begin around 10:30 a.m. Hundreds of motorcyclists typically participate in the event.

For the fifth year in a row, all participants will eventually end up at Malibu Bluffs Park for Rally Americana. The event is just across the street from Pepperdine University’s 9/11 memorial, “Waves of Flags,” which features 2,977 flags at Alumni Park to honor each of the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The rally, which lasts until 3 p.m., features vendors, beer, live music and a raffle drawing.

Part of the proceeds from this year’s event will go toward Chief Petty Officer Holly Katke and her family, including rehabilitation equipment and transportation. Katke suffers from a gunshot wound to the head in 2010 while helping soldiers during an ambush in Iraq; she survived but has lost functionality in the right side of her body and is legally blind.
