Unspeakable Gun Violence, In Texas and Just Down PCH

Unspeakable gun violence over the weekend … both in Texas and right in our front yard.

Four people were hit.

A 28 -year-old mother was shot and killed late Friday night …. as she was ushering people away from an argument between two groups of people at the Santa Monica Pier.

De’Ommie de la Cruz .. age 28 …  was shot and killed during a confrontation between passengers on two party buses around 1 a.m. Saturday.

The 28-year-old and her friends were returning to their bus when the suspects on the other bus got into a confrontation with one of the men.

Police said several suspects then opened fire.

Witnesses say 20 or 40 shots were fired.

Her mother tells Channel 7 that “De’Ommie was standing there ushering people back on the bus – hurry up, c’mon, c’mon – so she died a hero,”

De la Cruz had who worked as a school bus driver … and was devoted to her 2 year old  girl and 13 year old brother.

Parking Meters May Be Used Against Parking Hogs

Should parking meters be used to prevent parking hogs at primo spaces on Malibu streets?

Or is that an infringement on the concept of the Malibu way of life?

Virtually every city in California … except Malibu … uses parking meters at primo parking places.

Even though Malibu has time limits posted at some places … like along Cross Creek Road …  many businesses and residents feel it is unfair for one person to use the street parking all day.

But parking meters might mean an end to some cherished traditions … like Free Zuma on Westward Beach.

It could also be used to prevent overnight parking by campers.

The city staff says streets that could get parking meters include Cross Creek Road … Civic Center Way … and Malibu Road near the colony.

At Point Dume … Heathercliff Road at the shopping center and Cliffside Drive at Point Dume State Park

And Westward Beach Road

The whole issue goes before the city council next Monday.

Legacy Park Repairs May Be $$$ Blowout

The city of Malibu has won several awards from engineering associations … for Legacy Park.

The awards were for an innovative water cleaning filter that took dirty storm runoff … treated it … used much of it for the park’s natural landscaping … and put the excess clean water into the lagoon.

Great concept …. lousy execution.

Somehow it was ’t built or operated correctly … and salt water got sprayed on the park.

Since the park has an artificial lining … the salt just sits there in the park and kills trees.

The city has asked for bids to design and fix the problem.

But the problem is so severe … that the bidders can’t estimate how much it will cost to fix it.

Only one bid came in … at 346 thousand dollars just to design a fix.

City staff is recommending that the bid be thrown out … and that a design-only bid go out.

Then contractors will know what the project will cost.

And what will that total be?

Don’t know yet.

Site For New City Theater May Be In City Hall Backyard

And here’s an idea ….

The city has been looking around for a for vacant land to buy … for a variety of municipal uses … including the construction of a Cultural Arts Center.

The city has been in negotiations to buy the Malibu Playhouse at Point Dume … and also a vacant lot next to City Hall.

But the solution may by in City Hall’s backyard … literally.

City manager Reva Feldman says vacant space on the north side of the City Hall property could … in her words … be developed immediately as a Cultural Arts Center.

The city has 185 parking places …. and could build an underground parking garage and theater … and with an above ground multi-functional space.

The land is now vacant … it has an almost unobstructed ocean view over City Hall.

It backs up into a canyon … with houses far above.

The city manager is asking the city council to consider whether the vacant area should be

developed for a Cultural Arts Center.

As of this month … the city has more than 25 million dollars in its cash reserve fund …

One significant point …. there’s no mention in the staff reprt of a skateboard park … which has also been proposed for near City Hall .. and which has a bunch of vocal supporters.
