A rally to save Malibu Lagoon took place Feb. 5 at Coogie’s restaurant. The rally was mainly organized by Marcia Hanscom from Wetlands Defense Fund, which, along with two other organizations, filed a lawsuit against the Coastal Commission to stop the Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project.

Opponents of the plan say it would involve harmful bulldozing of the lagoon and harm endangered specie in the process.

Construction is scheduled to begin in June, before the case will be heard.

The controversy over the plan is mainly whether the lagoon is healthy as is and whether the state’s plan is too drastic. They say there are alternative, gentler ways to improve the lagoon’s health.

Supporters of the project say that the lagoon is not healthy and that it needs to be reconfigured to allow for oxygen to what they say is stagnant, polluted water.

Supporters include Heal the Bay, which has pitted long allied environmentalists against each other.
