alibu entertainment legend David Geffen is gearing up for the annual theater showcase known as “Backstage at the Geffen.” The media mogul will serve as this year’s 20th anniversary chairman. “Backstage” is an intimate theater experience like no other with a humorous, moving and enlightening look at what really goes on behind the scenes.

For the past 14 years, a dream ensemble cast has gathered to share their unscripted, unforgettable but candid and honest stories of life in front of, as well as outside of, the spotlight.

This year’s honorees include the incomparable Morgan Freeman. The “Driving Miss Daisy” star will be honored with the Distinction in Theater Award, along with philanthropist Jeff Skoll, who is in line to receive the Distinction in Service Award.

They will join an impressive and elite group of previous honorees, including Malibu’s Julie Andrews and Rita Wilson, comedy queen Carol Burnett, “Wild and Crazy Guy” Steve Martin, Sir Elton John, as well as industry titans like resident Leslie Moonves and Robert Iger.

The Geffen has been a hub of the local theater scene since opening its doors in 1995. It is noted for its intimate setting and celebrated for its world-renowned mix of classic and contemporary plays, provocative new works and productions. The not-for-profit organization continues to present a body of work that has gained national fame and recognition.

Named in honor of entertainment mogul, philanthropist and longtime Malibu resident David Geffen, the company was founded by Gil Cates. It is currently helmed by Artistic Director Randall Arney and Executive Director Gil Cates Jr. The venue, which welcomes more than 130,000 theater fans each year, maintains extensive education and community programs. Many are designed to give underserved young people a chance to develop an interest in the arts.

Over the years, the event has raised millions of dollars to support education and the arts. The sell-out show takes place on May 22. Bravo!

ROCKIN‘ THE DRIVE

We all love our local theater and entertainment venues from Pepperdine to the Malibu Playhouse, but sometimes a big draw lures you out of your driving comfort zone.

Here’s one to put on your calendar, and it’s epic. You’ll have head out to Indio — yup, Indio — but guess who you’ll find? Some of the most legendary names in rock, including Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Who, Neil Young and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.

Some say it’s the largest gathering of big name talent since Woodstock. So break out your love beads and fabulous fringe, and head to the Empire Polo Field Oct. 7-9. or Oct. 14-16. Groovy, baby, yeah!
