Wave the white flag

Now that we’ve had time to hopefully reflect and tone down the knee-jerk post-election rhetoric, we would all do well to remember that elections are not an end unto themselves but rather a means to an end. And that end is the building of a better community. This is a point I was prepared to make regardless of who won or lost. And I stand by it.

Notwithstanding our differences, I believe that we all ultimately want the same thing – a unified, rural Malibu. This is, after all, a small town. Any division in a community this size runs deep, and can amount to no good for anyone. My discussions with people of all viewpoints have only confirmed for me that the vast majority of us share the same goals. Our division – particularly between east and west Malibu – is with respect to how those goals can and should be achieved. So let’s stop fanning the flames of antagonism, call a truce, put our heads together and try to come up with solutions that engender solidarity rather than division. If we fail to even try, the next election could be even uglier. If we succeed, the next election could be downright boring. Now isn’t that a great incentive?
