Paddlers aid cause

On October 22, the Malibu community distinguished itself by staging a “Paddle Out” protest, which received the kind of attention a story this important deserves. Hundreds of people gathered on Malibu Pier and Surfrider to cheer on over 400 participants, some as young as three years old, in the “Paddle Out” against the proposed Cabrillo LNG Port.

Rarely have I seen any group of people come together so selflessly, professionally and with such clarity of purpose. Whole families (McDonnell, Buckley, Anawalt, Jensen, Wirht and Smoller, to name a few) gave their time, resources and energy to stand together, exercise their civic responsibilities and question the safety of this project. The story moved around the world in print, on the airwaves and in cyberspace. Within hours after the event a video was posted on Youtube, which thousands of people have watched.

Area businesses like Sicky Dicky, Becker Surfboards, Planet Grande Pictures and Monrose Catering, again just to name a few, pooled every resource and gave 110% for the cause. Pulled together in just three weeks, the help and co-operation of the city, county and state officials, especially the lifeguards, was crucial. The surf community was well represented by the pro surfers, locals and clubs like Malibu Boardriders.

But the real stand-outs for me were the Malibu kids. Their hard work, demeanor and spirit are a testament to the families they come from, the schools they attend and their innate understanding of speaking out for the environment. Their willingness to participate and be an integral part of the day was palpable. These kids were there at the crack of dawn, lugged tables, hoisted boxes, greeted people, knew the issue, paddled out and stayed to clean up. If they are our future, we are in very good hands.

On behalf of the California Coastal Protection Network, the event chairs and all the sponsors (see the complete list on www.coastaladvocates.com) I would like to thank all those who participated and made the “Paddle Out” such a resounding success on every level.
