Bears gave perspective

Timothy Treadwell’s life with the bears began as somewhat of a re-birth. He was given a second chance at life after narrowly escaping death from an overdose of drugs. Timothy, taking the advice of a close friend, took a brave step toward recovery by identifying what in life he was most passionate about. Animals. Bears. Having experienced a rough life among humans, I imagine Tim might have felt there was nothing to lose by venturing into the Alaskan wilderness to come in contact with the animal he so admired. As Timothy put it, the bears saved his life. In return, Timothy would dedicate the rest of his life to protecting them.

The documentation of life among grizzlies has uncovered amazing details about the behavior of these enormous carnivores. Grizzlies suffer a bad reputation, as do wolves and coyotes. What Timothy has successfully done is help change how we see them. Through the years, Timothy became an ardent spokesperson, championing his cause to protect grizzlies and their habitat by allowing others a glimpse into their world. Each year, between his visits to Alaska, Timothy treated thousands of school children to animated tales of his life in the Alaskan wilderness. He will be well remembered.

Grizzlies have lost a most dedicated advocate this week. All who Timothy enchanted with his quirky disposition, his tales of wild grizzly bears, his dedication and integrity, will miss him terribly.
