Ronald Rindge, Julie Van Zandt May and Ella Hirshfield were memorialized this week at a dedication ceremony for a new bench at Serra Retreat.
The memorial was “for all three because they were always together,” according to Darlene Dubray.
Rindge, who was a descendant of the Rindge family that founded Malibu, died in October.
The inscription on the bench reads: “In loving memory of a grateful man dedicated to his family and the history of Malibu.” The bench is located next to a bench dedicated to John Francis Rindge, who died in 2013. That bench includes a portion of the Prayer of St. Francis: “Make me a channel of your peace.”
“It was a great day celebrating Ron Rindge’s bench dedication at the famous Serra Retreat. May Rindge’s castle that became a Franciscan retreat in 1942. A great day to see all the Rindge family. I grew up with Ron’s children on Latigo Shore Drive. Wonderful seeing them all today!” said Lani Armstrong Netter, Ron Rindge’s neighbor.
