Shelley Schubert died from uterine cancer on July 22, with her daughter by her side. She was 54.

Schubert was born on March 30, 1954 and grew up in the hills of Malibu. She made the most of her childhood by taking advantage of the space to roam, riding her horse Blackjack everywhere he would take her. She frequented La Costa Beach, put on horse and pet shows for the younger neighborhood children, played her violin, pursued her 4H projects and was active in the community. Schubert supported her daughters’ love of horses, and the three shared the same passion, breeding and raising thoroughbred horses for the racetrack.

Schubert was a nurse. Her daughter, Helene, said she brightened the lives of those she came in contact with while working at Kaiser Permanente Urgent Care for the last seven years.

Schubert is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca and Helene Schubert, her mother, Betty Smith, brother, Marston Smith, sister-in-law, Betsy Smith, sister Shonti McKee, brother-in-law, Charles McKee, nieces, Hallie Smith and Kendra McKee, and nephews, Hunter and Hampton Smith.

A memorial service will take place in Malibu on Sunday. Donations may be made to The Shelley Schubert Luna Fund to help care for her racehorse. Checks payable to LL Farms.
