The following letter was sent to Jennifer Ferenstein, Sierra Club president
I sincerely hope that the Sierra Club was unaware of Van de Hoek’s criminal past when the organization endorsed this individual for the Malibu City Council. Van de Hoek admits to his acts of terrorism but glosses over them as “civil disobedience.” Support for this man creates distrust in an institution millions of people hold in high regard. It degrades the membership. Liability issues are sure to arise as well. Would Sierra Club donors knowingly support terrorism?
I recall reading a mission statement about promoting responsible use of the earth’s resources, about exploring, enjoying, and protecting. Does this sound familiar? If the Sierra Club is going to support willful disregard for the law, I doubt that I will ever be a member.
