Fifth-grade students at Point Dume Marine Science School went on the school’s annual three-day, two-night field trip to the Catalina Island Marine Institute — Toyon Bay. There, students had a chance to participate in hands-on and field activities, including watching dolphins, observing fish swimming in the kelp forest, examining and identifying plankton using microscopes, and learning about creatures of the night, invertebrates, saltwater fish, sharks and algae.
Those who went on the trip went on a night snorkel trip where they observed bioluminescent phytoplankton.
