In the Malibu High School girls basketball team’s last game of the season, the Sharks were down by a healthy margin against one of the better teams in their league. Then the team did the unexpected. They put senior Deseriee Edman in. Edman had not played a great deal of minutes during the season, but coach Andy Meyer put her in knowing that it was her goal to make just one basket by the end of her first year playing basketball. In the final quarter of the final game of her final season, the Sharks helped Deseriee accomplish her goal, as she scored her first basket of her short career as a Shark.
Although the Sharks did not bring home the league title, this simple act of teamwork and sportsmanship shows the true reason why high school sports, as well as sports in general, can be so special to the athletes who participate in them.
